Modern Chord Progressions
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (22 March, 1985)
Author: Ted Greene
Average review score:

A must have for the aspiring Jazz guitarist!
Ted Greene is one of those rare individuals who has made it his life's work to teach harmony on the guitar. In this book, Ted takes you down the road to a greater understanding of how chords can be strung together to create harmonized musical phrases. The book is not for the beginner or for the faint of heart. It is best digested slowly - say a page at a time. The best favor you can do for yourself is to attack every chord and every phrase analytically. Play every harmonic phrase slowly and cleanly until you can do it perfectly. Take apart each chord and make sure you know what the harmonic function of each note in the chord is. By that I mean mentally (or physically) label every note on each string in the chord with it's corresponding scale degree - R 3 5 b7, etc. If a chord is named F7b9#5 figure out why. It took me over a year to work my way through the book. It can be done! Now go practice.

A Municipal Mother: Portland's Lola Greene Baldwin, America's First Policewoman
Published in Hardcover by Oregon State Univ Pr (September, 1995)
Author: Gloria E. Myers
Average review score:

Baldwin led the way...
Lola Baldwin indeed was the first policewoman in the United States with arrest authority. Portland also may boast of the first woman to be named Chief of a metropolitan police force in 1985: Penny Harrington. Harrington's innovations in diversity training and community policing are heralded today throughout the country, and reflected upon in her autobiography, Triumph of Spirit. The dedication and leadership of women like Baldwin and Harrington provide role models, not only for women who desire a career in law enforcement, but for all women who have the courage to follow their dreams.

Natural Knowledge in Preclassical Antiquity
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (December, 1991)
Author: Mott T. Greene
Average review score:

lucid,scholarly,revolutionary essays on pre-history
Mr. Greene has done an extraordinary job of re-visioning prehistory. This very readable collection of short essays on subjects ranging from cave paintings to Plato gives provocative interpretations exciting as the current spate of millennial UFO garbage while remaining grounded in current scientific research. I found the chapter "Prehistory" extraordinary; he reminds us of our vast ignorance about dawn of mankind. Witty, lucid, and well-researched, he aims at debunking academia's certainties. I teach a history of science class and regard this as a gem.

New insights in modern astrology
Another mindfield of information, knowledge and wisdom from two "giants" of the astrological world. A collection of fascinating lectures from the Jupiter-Saturn conference (1981), I particularly enjoyed the sections on relationships and synastry. There are a few gems shared in this book that you will not find anywhere else. The title is right! Insights abound!

New Perspectives in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (01 August, 1999)
Authors: Louis J. Billera, Anders Bjorner, Curtis Greene, Rodica E. Simion, Richard P. Stanley, and Anders Bj^D"orner
Average review score:

A wonderful collection of research-expository surveys
This volume contains expository introductions to some of the most exciting research areas in algebraic combinatorics. Although most of the articles began life as a lecture at MSRI, the authors have done much more than publish transcripts of their talks; they have produced carefully written articles that contain much information that they could not present during the severe time constraints of the original combinatorics seminar. Anyone interested in entering one of the fields touched upon in this volume would be hard-pressed to find a better way to get started than to study the relevant article in this book.

Since the articles were written there have of course been advances; I will just mention that a number of Jim Propp's matchings problems have been solved, and that Mark Haiman has proved the n! conjecture.

Contents: Matroid bundles (L. Anderson); Combinatorial representation theory (H. Barcelo, A. Ram); An algorithmic theory of lattice points in polyhedra (A. Barvinok, J. E. Pommersheim); Some algebraic properties of the Schechtman-Varchenko bilinear forms (G. Denham, P. Hanlon); Combinatorial differential topology and geometry (R. Forman); Macdonald polynomials and geometry (M. Haiman); Enumeration of matchings: problems and progress (J. Propp); The generalized Baues problem (V. Reiner); Littlewoord-Richardson semigroups (A. Zelevinsky).

Of Moment
Published in Paperback by Gnomon Press (October, 1998)
Author: Jonathan Greene
Average review score:

Long live the short poem!
What a relief this book is! At a time when most editors and academics have embraced sprawling, discursive poems in verse that amounts to little more than lined-off prose, and when the most prominent dissenters mistake accentual-syllabic doggerel for poetry, here is one book to the rescue! Greene's terse, often dry-witted poems recall the old Chinese and Japanese masters. There are fifty-one tiny poems here, averaging around half a dozen short lines each. Greene's skill with this form just goes to show that you don't have to be long-winded to make a big impression. And Gnomon has done a great job with the book, giving each poem its own page and setting it off with plenty of white space. It's a beautiful book, in more ways than one.

Cooking with Your Favorite Fairy Tale Characters
This book rocks! It brings stories that children are familar with to life, while allowing them to enjoy healthy eats. They don't even know that what they are eating is "good for them." The characters become real and it makes the reader and cook feel part of the story. In addition to nutritional recipes the book also contains tid-bits about certain foods, measurements and interesting facts. A must have for any teacher, parent or child at heart.

Excellent guide to put us in touch with ourselves
This user-friendly book takes complex concepts and makes them accessible to those who find themselves journeying through life with more questions than answers. It not only touches the natural hunger in all of us to know the purpose and meaning of our lives, but offers solutions and directives on how to be at peace with ourselves. As a psychologist I highly recommend this book as an invaluable guide to befriending our spiritual selves and maximizing our potential.
